The Warsaw: A Look Back
Over 150 years ago, a prosperous Richmond businessman named William Anderson dreamed of building the grandest estate in the city. It would be of red brick with great formal gardens and provide expansive views of the surrounding countryside. His dream was completed in 1832, and the estate was called "Warsaw."
For forty years, it was a private residence of prominence. Then, soon after the Civil War, it was sold to the Little Sisters of the Poor for conversion to a charitable hospital and remained in their hands for over a century.
Today, after many architectural transitions, Anderson's house rests within the walls of a massive Second Empire structure.
The Building has received the distinction of national landmark registry. And now, in the midst of a vast restoration, it will once again the be the most exclusive private residence in downtown Richmond.
After the Little Sisters moved to a new facility, the building stood vacant for six years until renovations for the present condominiums were begun. Planning sessions were conducted for over a year to insure that the architectural integrity of the building would be maintained while 150 years' accumulation of paint, undistinguished fixtures and modern additions were removed.
The Warsaw Condominiums consists of thirty-six condos, each with it's own unique floorplan, in fact, no two floor plans are alike. Several units are one-floor living, while others are two. There are 2, 3 and even 4 bedroom properties, including a top floor penthouse, all serviced by a quiet efficient elevator. The large pool and clubhouse are quite stately and offer the inhabitants a place to relax in a very peaceful park-like setting.
This Condominium is truly a work of art, and beckons the most genuine respect from old and new residents alike.
